About the Seminar:

The speaker, Mr Lok Vi Ming SC, will start by introducing the benefits of Mediation. Following which, he will discuss the “Arb-Med-Arb” features and benefits and whether the arbitrator and mediator should be the same person (the practice and preference varies from country to country and culture to culture).

Finally, the speaker will raise the issue of whether the restrictions on contingency fees should be lifted for arbitration and mediation matters.

About the Speaker:

lvm 

Mr. Lok Vi Ming SC is the Managing Director of LVM Law Chambers LLC. He was appointed a Senior Counsel in 2005 and a former President of the Law Society of Singapore.

Vi Ming is recognised as one of the leading aviation and insurance lawyers in Singapore.  He is cited in numerous leading legal directories includes Chambers, The Legal 500, The International Who’s Who of Aviation Lawyers and Insurance Lawyers, and in Euromoney Legal Media’s Guide to the World’s Leading Aviation and the World’s Leading Insurance & Reinsurance Lawyers. In the 2017 edition, Chambers describes him as a leading disputes resolution lawyer with a solid reputation in Aviation and Insurance litigation.

Vi Ming acted in various landmark cases in Singapore including leading the successful defence teams for SilkAir in the MI 185 Incident and for Singapore Airlines in the SQ 006 Incident.  He also successfully acted for Rayson Tan in the landmark product liability Slim 10 litigation.  Vi Ming also led the team representing insurers in the Singapore Flyer breakdown.  He also represented various hospitals including Thomson Medical in a high profile dispute relating to the scope of liability relating to problems arising from an assisted reproductive procedure.

Vi Ming has also acted in some high profile and high value trust disputes; one a multinational dispute involving over $100m of assets that was fought in the High Court in Singapore and in Malaysia before it was finally referred to the Singapore International Mediation Centre; and another involving over $200m of assets that was fought out in a hearing spanning almost 50 days in the High Court, before it was finally decided by the Court of Appeal.  Vi Ming’s clients succeeded both in the High Court as well as the Court of Appeal.

He also represents various statutory boards and government or government linked agencies including Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA), STB, CAAS, CAG, CCS. He is also highly sought after as arbitration Counsel, as Arbitrator for both International as well as domestic disputes, and as a mediator on the panels of both the Singapore Mediation Centre and the Singapore International Mediation Centre. Vi Ming serves on the boards of various private as well as public listed companies.  He is also on the Board of the SIMC and is also Member of the Board of Trustees of the Singapore University of Social Sciences, which includes among its faculties, Singapore’s third law school. Vi Ming still actively contributes to the legal profession.  He is a Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Law and Chairman of the Professional Indemnity Committee of the Law Society of Singapore.

About the Chairperson:

Mr. Chia Ho Choon is a partner in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department, and a member of the firm's lnternational Arbitration Practice, Group. Ho Choon obtained a Diploma in lnternational Commercial Arbitration in 2004, is a Fellow and Vice-President of the Singapore lnstitute of Arbitrators, a Fellow of the Chartered lnstitute of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the Malaysian lnstitute of Arbitrators. He was on the panel for the Plenary Session on Enforcing Arbitration Awards in Asia and Contesting Arbitral Rulings at the Asia Pacific Dispute Resolution Summit.
He conducted a seminar for the Bar Association of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on lnternational Arbitration and the Benefits of Arbitration. Ho Choon presented papers on Dispute Resolution in Asia - Arbitration v Litigation for the ln-House Legal Counsel Asia Seminar, lnternational Arbitration Law of Singapore and Enforcement of Foreign Awards at the lnternational Conference on Construction Arbitration in Philippines. He helped organise and taught at the Arbitration Law & Practice course in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 2009, and actively taught in Cambodia from 2010 to 2014 in courses run by SlArb.
