The Institute’s annual Fellowship Assessment Course (FAC) is a programme which consists of 6 modules and an Award Writing Examination. Module 1 covers topics relating to the Laws of Contract, Tort and Evidence with an open-book written assessment on these subjects, but lawyers are exempted from this Module. The remaining 5 modules cover topics such as the arbitration agreement, institutional and ad hoc arbitrations, appointment of arbitral tribunal, role and duties of the tribunal, law and rules governing the arbitration, arbitration procedure, conduct of arbitration hearings, drafting of directions, and drafting of the Award. The Award Writing Examination is an open-book examination and assesses candidates on their knowledge of the topics covered in the 6 modules as well as their ability to write an Arbitral Award.
The FAC for 2018 was conducted over 5 days in October. Module 1 for non-lawyers was conducted on 18 and 19 October 2018. The remaining modules were conducted on 26 and 27 October 2018 and the Award Writing Examination was held on 29 October 2018. There were 27 participants from various professions and disciplines who attended FAC 2018, including several who hailed from Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and India. The feedback from the participants on the FAC 2018 was extremely positive and gratifying.
The Institute acknowledges and thanks the teaching faculty for having conducted yet another successful FAC, the members of the Education Committee who had helped with the course materials, and the Secretariat for having organized and administered the whole Course with its usual efficiency and competence. The teaching faculty for FAC 2018 comprised Course Director and lecturer Prof Leslie Chew SC, Deputy Course Director and lecturer Chia Chor Leong, lecturers Mohan Pillay, Johnny Tan and Edmund Kronenburg, and tutors Chia Ho Choon and Edwin Lee.
