A Fellowship Assessment Course (“FAC”) was held on several days during the period 20 to 30 October 2017 this year with 36 participants from a range of backgrounds, including practising lawyers, engineers, architects and businessmen, from Singapore as well as various other countries.
The non-lawyers in the group were invited to do 2 days of introductions to law, contracts, tort and revision of basics of arbitration and evidence; with an open-book written assessment on these subjects. The whole group then attended 6 modules and practice sessions of the actual FAC course, which comprised subjects such as issues concerning the constitution of the arbitral tribunal, arbitration procedures, interlocutory applications, the substantive hearing and awards. More than half the course covered the subject of awards and award-writing, culminating in an award-writing examination.

The feedback form the participants showed that most of the participants found the course a good and enjoyable learning experience, though challenging in some parts; and we also gathered feedback to be used in improving future courses and award-writing examinations.
The Institute is thankful to the faculty for their commitment, time and energy in conducting the course, as well as to the Secretariat in ensuring a smooth run of the logistics, publication of materials and administration of the course.
